I have been keeping my axies in my 40" long tank for nearly 3 years now, and I used super fine black sand as substrate from day 1.

I always know that gravel will cause serious digest problem for axies in case any of them swallowing it by mistake, but lately I'm thinking to make a better home for them with more healthy plants so I'm wondering if I can replace the black sand with Aqua Soil?

The aqua soil is bit bigger than the sand but it's smaller than 3mm. Does any of Axies keeper used or using Aqua Soil for substrate now and able to give me some advice?

Thanks in advance!:)

Enclosed a pic of my current tank!

Could you provide pictures or a link to the substrate you plan on using?

I assume you mean ADA Aqua Soil? I'm new to Axolotyls so I can't say I've used it with them but it is available in a powder form: Amazonia 9 liter Powder Type

meant to be spread as a thin layer. Maybe this would be the safest bet? I've read a ton of good things about this substrate for planted aquaria, however, as it points out on the page listed above, it will lower PH and KH so you'll definently want to take that into considertaion.

If you go to the Caudata Culture pages and look up 'aquascaping' I believe Frank uses aquatic soil in his tank with his axolotls, I believe he covered the soil with large stones. Take a look, his tank is beautiful a real inspiration.

Wow...thx u all very much! Very nice to see your replies!
Yes angyles, that's the similar one I saw from market, the shop has this one too, but the one I'm looking for is from Japan, from their package it mentioned the soil will keep the PH from 6 to 7, I guess it could be better?

Kerry1968's idea is truely helpful as well, may be I should consider to use something else on top of the soil, instead of big stones may be my curent black sand!
