I am looking for some ideas on hardy species for a mostly/fully aquatic 10-15 gallon set up? I'm Ok on having a single specimen, such as Ambystoma mexicanum (my initial thought)...however I would be ok with a smaller species where I could house a couple/few individuals. I would like them to be relatively cheap as well, no more then ~$20 each.

Guidelines:

  • Mostly (preferably fully) Aquadic
  • Able to be housed comfortably in a 10-15gallon
  • Not require additional heating (room temp)
  • Inexpensive
  • Relatively easy to care for
Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Cynops Pyrrhogaster would be a great species. They are pretty cheap and hardy. Newts SHOULD NOT have any heating though. If anything, the real problem is keeping the tank cool. You can probably house two or three in a 10 or 15 gallon, although I'm by no means an expert in keeping them.

A couple of other possibilities... 3 or 4 Cynops cyanurus (blue-tailed firebelly). A single Pleurodeles waltl (ribbed newt).
