Animal Planet is going to have a show called "Almighty Amphibians" tonight at 10pm EST.

It's going to feature Japanese Giant Salamanders, among others.

I've seen it before on Animal Planet --

There's a 4-5 minute segment featuring a 5-foot Andrias japonicus at the end, but there are also segments on Hellbenders and Mudpuppies.

Wow, this is the first time I've had a reason to watch TV in a while, not to mention see something that interests on animal planet. YEAH!

man...i wanna copy!!-im too poor and busy to get cable-anyone record it??

Be prepared everyone... the last time they aired this, the forums received a number of requests from people wanting to know where they could obtain hellbenders.

you should post that where they are legal, they require extensive paperwork, proof of income, vet approved facilities, additional homeowners insurance (like that for people with dobermans) and yearly site inspections by a board.....that should weed a few of them out.....

Paris, I taped it...Once I figure out how to copy it I could maybe send you one...

I have seen this show a number of times. then again, i am always watching animal planet, being the fanatic i am.

I didnt think it was that good, terribly basic for the most part (not that you expect graduate curriculum from animal planet-)... a bunch of old guys talking about how they killed hellbenders as kids... I guess it could have been about lions or something equally as uninteresting instead. I liked the bug show before that though - when the scorpion stung the guy I about fell off the couch laughing.

Anyone see that?

Yeah, I saw both, that bug show was interesting. The amphibian show was weak! At first, I was like "its about time the have a show like that!" But then when I saw it it was kinda boring. I mean sure the giant salamander was cool becuase he was huge! But besides that, it was dull. I wish they would have shown more salamanders and newts and stuff. Maybe someday!

I saw it, it was nice to see some live footage of the animals but it progressed kind of slow(maybe due to all of the commercials) and overall I guess I expected it to be more informative. It's worth seeing but I've learned a lot more about these things just surfing the internet(caudata.org in particular

Kim - you won't be able to watch it. They have a different colour system (and it has other ramifications too) in the US and Canada. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

The video was made by Granada Television in Bristol, and the "giant" fire salamander in the sequence is owned by a member of this very forum.

I am reliably informed that the Starlet is now gainfully employed as an after dinner speaker. Signed autobiographies will soon be available for a small fee.

Mike do you know if it would be avaliable over here, or even where to get it, if it is.

John,

As soon as I posted that I thought I may not be able to get to see it.

Kim,

I have a copy somewhere that you can borrow.

If you mail me privately with your address I'll post it to you.

There's a nature documentary out there called snakes and eagles. Its set in northern spain and had loads of newts and salamanders.Best one i've ever seen. These programes are few and far between!

There will soon be a Nigel Marven documentary on channel 5 called Venom Hunters that will have a section about using peptides from amphibians to make medicine. I don't know about caudates but I can tell you it will have Agalychnis callidryas, Litoria caerulea, and Bombina orientalis.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
