I'm interested in Ambystoma laterale, the Blue Spotted salamander. I'd like to here from those who keep it, whats its temperment? Besides its cool coloring, is there anything interesting in its behaviour? How many could i keep in a 20 gal setup? I'm guessing its care is similar to other Ambystomas.

Its care is like those of other terrestrial ambystomatids. If you haven't yet seen it, please look at the care sheet for Ambystoma tigrinum in Caudata Culture. As A. laterale are smaller than tiger salamanders, food items will need to be smaller as well. They tend to be 'outgoing' like tigers and aren't generally as shy as some other ambystomatids. Look in the Advanced section here: Species, Genus & Family Discussions - Mole Salamanders but not tigers or axolotls (Ambystomatids) at Caudata.org Newt and Salamander Portal for discussions about the blue spotted.

How many would comfortably live in a 20 gal tank? Is four too many?

4 would be the most I would put in one. I've found 3 under one log, but they still reserve the ability to find another log in the wild. They can't move tanks in captivity.
