Despite our coldest night of the year (mid 20s), some friends and I braved the elements and do a little birding along the coastal FL panhandle. I decided to take an afternoon detour to a spot I discovered last year with a very specific target in mind.

Under the second log I rolled...

A small male.

Interestingly, there was a young Two-toed Amphiuma under the log next to his (didn't bother to photo).

While on the subject, this was encouraging:

Now if only they could manage that 'critical habitat' properly.

cool pics.......coldest night of the year mid 20s, thats kinda a punch in the crotch, we had -20s and then some a couple weeks ago, and that was during the day.....the first day it got about 20+ I remember telling people "warm day, huh?" well anyways I love the pics(would have loved to see that amphuma too)

Yes, that's the same individual in all three pics. Just thought I'd throw in several shots for the sake of variety.

This weekend was brutally cold by Florida standards...I had ice on my windshield this morning!

Hey Pierson, would you mind me using some of these pics as the basis for a painting? This is a very interesting species and if I can get the time around some of my other projects I'd like to do one of this guy.

Go for it. I've got many more photos of this species if you need.

Thanks!! I think I can probably use these just fine but if I think I could use some more I'll send you a PM.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
