Hey guys, my turn to ask a question.
I'm building a DIY peltier chiller for Zion's tank, and I have everything in order except one thing I'm not 100% sure of. (I'm a little paranoid to be honest
)
The part where the water runs by the peltier device and is cooled is made from aluminum. I know copper is toxic to lotls and is a no-no, but I'm not sure about aluminum.
Here's a study Seachem did on aluminum toxicity in reef tanks: http://www.seachem.com/support/AluminumSolubilityToxicity.pdf The consensus was that at the PH levels most aquarists have their tanks at, aluminum isn't a problem. Basically it has an oxidised layer and that is what is in contact with the water.
I just want to make sure the same thing applies to lotls? Correct me if any of this is wrong, I'm not much of a science-oriented person so a lot of this is flying over my head but I'm trying to fully understand before I build this thing.
This is the part in question and this is the guide we're following; it was used for a shrimp tank.
I kinda assume it's fine, I mean we use aluminum to store food... Just better to check and be safe rather than sorry.
