Hello!

So our Axolotl, Peach, has been sick for about 4 weeks now. After getting Peach checked by two vets, we got some antibiotics for him. He is suffering from an infection that causes parts of his body to bleed and swell up. He's also going through red leg syndrome which is getting better. His swells are also reducing, phew.

The thing is, I think during his healing process, air got trapped within his skin. I mean, I guess it could be something else? So we're wondering how to deal with this.

Throughout this entire healing process, some new issue just keeps coming up. With the antibiotics we've been applying, we're doing two water changes daily (one in the morning and the other at night).

I'm attaching a photo below. In the photo, you'll also notice that I have Indian Almond Leaves during the time he's in his hospital-fridge tub. We've only just started to introduce this idea. However, if it is a bad idea, please do let me know. I think the leaves have been helpful. It actually helped let me know he was ready to eat again in which he went almost 4 weeks without anything. Sigh.

Anyways...I would appreciate the knowledge here. Thank you for your time!

If it's something akin to red leg syndrome, you'll find basic information there :
or there :

If the treatment with antibiotics works well, that's Ok, but the underlying cause (i.e. 1rst cause) is probably not corrected.
2 possibilities :

- you have had your axolotl for 4 weeks. He was already carrying some bacteria caught during its captive life in the store in poor conditions. With your help, everything will going fine.

- you have had your axolotl for much longer than 4 weeks. In this case, you can suspect there is something wrong in your main tank, which needs a good cleaning.

As for the "air sacs" (I doubt it's really air), I would let them disappear by themselves.

Thank you for your reply. The air sacs(?) seems to be going away. Thank goodness.

We've actually had Peach for over 6 months now. We had him and another one (same size and age) in the same tank. They got along well so there was no issue with their behavior. The other axolotl is completely healthy and loves interacting with us (or just loves food, haha). And we also check the water parameters daily.

So we're thinking Peach might be predisposed to illness. Peach had always had a slower metabolism or disinterest in food. His gills were also in poor condition when we got him. However, now thinking in retrospect, I think we may have been overfeeding Peach. I'm also reading that freeze dried blood worms can lead to intestinal issues, so we're adding Repashy Grub Pies to their diets along with occasional pellets. We're not sure about live food, though...

If and when he does get better, I don't think we can out him back in the same tank as he is now quite smaller than our other axie. We also only have one canister filter-cooler, so we don't really know what to do 😔

Would putting him back in the same tank but using a divider to separate the axolotls work, you think?

Yes, a divider is possible, but the filter will work only for one side, except if you guide the exit water to the other side.
