my tank seems to have a lot of air bubbles at the top of the tank and my axolotis often comes up for air is this normal

Can you tell us more about any filtration you may have or how often you change the water? Axolotls do gulp air from time to time (how often is often?), but I'm not sure about the bubbles in your tank.

dont have a filter i bought one and it made the water very cloudy which i didnt like so took it out i got axolotis from nephew who had her for nearly 2 years with no filter and water was not changed very often and she has done fine so far so really dont feel i need filter i have changed water partly every week and got the hoover for the bottom of tank so pretty clean but i have noticed she has not been as active the last few days she keeps hiding away partly changed water 2 days ago and no bubbles but now today i ca see a few building up again on top also saw a bubble coming out her mouth a few times under the water

Completely normal. The surface tension of water traps the bubbles if you don't have anything to break it, like a filter or an airstone.

You can add a bubbler, or you can skim the surface with a paper towel.

Me, I like bubblers.

Specifically, I utilize these(in my ten gallon tanks) without the filter cartridge installed. My reasoning is I get nice aeration and circulation without the filter stripping all the live foods out of the tank. There are no moving parts, so there is no risk of grinding up your larvae. Once they get older and move onto larger sinking foods, you can add the filter in. Also, they are CHEAP!
