... I finally got some newts. I've been reading the threads posted here and waiting for the perfect opportunity to get them and everything came together yesterday. I picked these little guys up in a pet store in Sacramento for $4.99 each. I think they are Eastern Newts?? Two seem to have a fondness for the moss and the other likes to stay in the water as much as possible. They all ate the live brown worms i had yesterday, but they don't want to eat today. Hopefully this will not be a long term trend. Anyways, i am extremely happy about this and am glad to have joined the ranks of this hobby. Thanks for looking!!

That's great that you have decided to do your research before going out and getting some newts. It is something we encourage on this forum. You have eastern newts. There is a care sheet for this species on the caudata culture section of this webpage here:

I wouldn't worry if they don't accept food again immediately. They look very healthy and if they've already accepted food, they will probably feed again soon. Good luck and congrats!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
