Hi everyone ive been thinking of getting a pair of alpine newts maybe even three and housing them in an 80 litre tank i have been researching about them for about a year now and i just have few questions that iw ould like to be sure off before i make the commitment.
1. is that enough room for 3 i wouldnt want to overcrowd them
2. would it be wise to get 3 females or can i have mixed genders
3. would a sponge filter be enough with frequent water changes
4. do they become venture out of water ocasionally or are they always aquatic

Hi,
To answer point 4 :
It depends what alpine newt you will get.
Apuana, cyreni or veluchiensis are very aquatic as adults.
The type subspecies may want to leave water each summer.

Additionally, if the animals you will get are juveniles, then they will be fully terrestrial and unsexable.

Some types of alpine newts go terrestrial as juveniles. Som subspecies stay totally aquatic for their entire life cycle. They are not territorial and don't fight other normal behavior that rarely causes any wounds. If you have more than 1 male they will display their colors better. They are relative small salamanders. I keep up to a dozen in a 10 gallon tank. I've bred Ichthyosaura alpestris alpestris and Ichthyosaura alpestris apuanas. The I a. alpestris always want to go to land as efts. The I. a. apuanas like to stay in water through their entire life.
