Advice needed about new tank please

My axolotl Emilio turned out to be Emilia and laid eggs. This means I've had to buy her a new tank so Pancho can't make her lay anymore - he's also been beating her up a bit lately!

I was wondering if I actually have to cycle her new tank if I use about 50% water from the tank they both live in right now. Is it the water that has the friendly micro-organisms or do they have to build up on the actual tank/filter etc?

Even if I am supposed to cycle the new tank, which would be better for her? To put her in the new tank anyway, or to leave her and risk more eggs? She's only just reached maturity and even laying the first lot was probably a huge strain on her.

I'd be very greatful for any advice or suggestions. Thanks!

Yes you do still have to cycle the tank. The 50% water will not cycle the tank. The good bacteria is in your filter and on any substrate/tank floor and tank decorations or caves.

Why don't you leave her and move Pancho. This way she won't get stressed at the move.

Whichever one you move, move their cave and a few decorations that were in their tank to the new one, keep it damp in between moves in some of the tankwater (from cycled tank).

From the 2nd day onwards on the new tank test the water daily for the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels and if need be do a 20-30% waterchange, after the test. This will keep the levels safe enough for Pancho/Emilia to live in.
