Sadly due to age and ill health I am going to get my pond filled in as I can no longer keep it maintained properly. I have had the pond for about 20 years and have many frogs and newts. I don't have fish.
My question is before emptying and filling the pond in, what do I do with my newts. I know the frogs will hop away and find somewhere, but I am worried about the newts. Shall I try to net them and put them in a container until I find someone with a pond to take them, or do they hop away too? It is a sad day but regretfully the pond has to go. Any ideas welcome.
Thank you

Hi, welcome to the forums.
I´m guessing there must be other suitable areas nearby? If that´s the case, if you were to fill the pond during their terrestrial phase, they would migrate in search of new water masses when the time comes for them to go aquatic again. They are quite decent at finding new breeding grounds, although as you say, not as good as frogs.
If there is a suitable new home for them very close by i would simply move them, as it´s very unlikely they would be exposed to stuff that close populations weren´t.

I´m sure you must have had great times in 20 years of enjoying your pond, i know i dream of having one way too often xD
