Hi, can you have an adult eastern newt in the same semi-aquatic tank as a red eft?

I already have an adult but I would have loved to see him change from an eft

My tank is W 12” x L 24” x H 15” with 25lite of water and about 30% land but I can get more,
The eft won’t just walk off into the water and drown will it?

If you want an eft to become aquatic you need to offer excellent water conditions for it. With 25l, the possibility of offering excellent conditions is not good. The more water the better, and they can feel it.

Anyway, i wouldn´t advice you to buy red efts from pet-shops...they are all WC and usually adapt badly. Sudden, unexplained deaths are surprisingly common with imports of this species.

Efts are surprisingly good swimmers. Drowning shouldn't be an issue provided it has an easy exit out of the water. When it starts turning a yellow/greenish color then you know it is about ready to become fully aquatic.

Thank you all for your replys.

If not from pet-shops then where? I don’t think red efts are common in the uk

You can keep an eye on the classified section here on this site but I'm almost positive you'll have to get a WC one. So if you see one in the shop you might as well go and get it. Unfortunately N. v. viridescens is one newt that isn't bred that often. You'll be very hard pressed to find CB ones.

I got mine from a UK breeder and a german breeder, so if you are patient, you´ll find some. They are not easy to raise, though...definitely not a beginner species at all....
If you can´t find any, getting pet-shop ones because there´s no alternative is, personally, a rather bad excuse. Think about the poor animals.
My advice in that case would be to choose an adequate species and leave N.viridescens for the future when you have gained experience.

I am still new to the newt world so I’m going to stick with what I know, only my red-spot is all alone? Thank you all for your help

Your entitled to your own opinion but just remember not every pet store is a death sentence for a newt. There are some out there that actually give them the proper care.
