Hi there, I've got my axolotl a couple of days.

So my tank currently has no gravel or substrate, I've got 2 large caves a couple of big rocks (maybe too many?) & of course some plants.

Wondering whether or not people think having sand or some sort of gravel is a good idea or not, because I'm wondering if i should put a gravel in. Opinions on preferences & why its a good/bad idea?

Is it better to have a load of rocks everywhere or more ground space for him to walk around on?

Also would I be able to just switch from no gravel to gravel or how would that work?

Thanks!

Hi,

Gravel is a really bad idea. Axolotls can easily swallow it and I see endless threads on here where peoples axolotls aren't well or floating. A lot of them are because they have swallowed gravel and it gets stuck in their guts and is hard to pass. Even small rocks can be swallowed, just make sure the rock is larger than the axolotls head.

Many people use sand as a substrate to help axolotls grip the bottom of the tank. They still swallow sand, but obviously it's much easier to pass. It's best to use soft sand, any kind of scratchy sand could harm their digestive system. Using a feeding bowl also minimizes the amount of sand they swallow too.
Other people also use slate as a substrate too.

I personally don't use any substrate and prefer a bare bottom tank, it's so much easier to clean. I have a few rocks in so I make sure I move them all around each day and clean around and under them. I've put two bridges in the tank too so he's got more floor space. He's always walking over them or taking a stroll under them and they work as a good hide.

I think the best way to add substrate like sand would be to remove the axies from the tank. You need to give it a really good wash to eliminate all the small cloudy particles. Then put it in the tank. It needs a while to settle as it will still be cloudy even after a good wash. Axies don't have eyelids so they can't blink so they really do need to be put in a separate container until the sand settles.

Hope this helps

My Axy's love their rocks. they hide behind them and sit on them. but i wouldmake sure any rock you get is smooth, any rough edges and they could easily cut themselves (my son goes mad when we are looking for decorations for the tank as i feel them outside and inside to check they arent sharp)

Also you need to check out if the rock is ok for their tank

My substrate is just general play sand that was thoroughly washed, i find it easier to clean than a bare bottomed tank and its cute when you look in and can see all their tiny footprints all over :D

I would 100% steer clear of gravel for axolotls... although I do not yet own an axie, I have read MANY times that axies are very very prone to eating the gravel; this ultimately leads to it compacting in their stomach and causing death. Sand all the way!!
