My 5 year old son had a cfb that we kept for about 1-2 years or so. Last night she escaped using extreme ninja tactics, and sadly passed away through dessication. It wasn't easy to tell him in the morning, and he was pretty upset. He loves all of our sals and newts, but LOVED "his". I told him to look through my sal/newt book and find one he liked. His reply was: "I want one that lives for ever. And always stays..". It broke my heart!
Does anyone have a suggestion on a replacement species? I think he is leaning toward a terrestrial species.
Thanks for listening to my tragedy.

That's so sad.

Well, I can't suggest one that lives forever, but Fire Salamanders, which you might be able to find at an Expo or online, are a cool terrestrial species, or Marbled Salamanders, which you might be able to collect.

Thank you for your sympathy, and you are right, those are great suggestions! I'll see what he thinks when he wakes up today! Last night he wanted a spotted sal b/c he's big like our tiger sal "clay"! Thanks again!

I've read that a chinese fire belly can last up to 15 years if properly cared for(and if you are lucky). Its sort of sad your newt escaped, if you kept it for 1-2 years, why not just get another?

How did it get out?

I don't know if you've decided yet, but a fire salamander might not be the best choice for a 5 year old unless he won't be touching it at all- they have huge parotid glands and excrete some serious toxins if upset. Tiger or spotted salamanders would be a good bet.

He has never held nor touched any species we keep. He understands that they are toxic, but more importantly, can be hurt in many ways from handling. He really, just likes to watch them swim/feed/prowl, etc. Thanks for the concern though! He has a Spotted Sal on the way, just to update everyone who may be following this thread!
