Ok I go to feed my axolotls, just a minute ago and there was a snail, YEP A SNAIL on the glass of my tank. Just a tiny baby one, sliming its way along the tank glass. I didnt introduce it to the tank, But the shell looks similar to things that appear in the frozen bloodworm i feed to my axolotls, but theres no way it could defrost and come alive, is there?

Please hlep me understand where this snail came from, I also need to know what to do with it ASAP. Thank you!!!

From a very confused rei!:eek::confused:

Snails seem to show up in tanks that have nothing in them but water and plastic plants. I think they are all but impossible to prevent and/or eliminate. If you quarantine all new things for 30 days you can lessen the chances but sometimes it still happens. Avoid all chemical remedies for snails and any fish that eats them will nip the gills of your axie so that is out as well. Your best bet is to keep the tank clean and mechanically remove them when seen. In the absence of a substantive food source they will never become a problem.

So it just came from nowhere? *Really confused*

Should I just remove it? I think if i dont my axolotl may eat it...It only looks similar to a snail as i look closer, its a bit closer into the shell and the antenna are more oddly shaped :S

Logic dictates that it had to come from somewhere. That said, I have had snails pop up with no cause that I could determine.

I added a new plant recently, perhaps there was an egg on it or something :S I've removed it now and its swimming abot in a little container. I cant just "get rid of it" though, Im going to keep it for a day or 2 and just see what happens, my granda has a pond so he might take it.

When I put new plants in (I forgot to quarantine the plants) I had an out break of small brown snails. My axolotls didn't eat them, but didn't want to chance any diseases being transmitted, so I took out the plants, confined them for 30 days, cleaned the tank, now no worries!

Cheers
Sharon

Yep it would have come on the plant. That's how I got mine many months ago. We now only have a couple of very small ones, they seem to remain at about the same population in the tank with my one axie and not cause him any trouble. Mechanical removal is best if you look to be getting lots. That and adding my axolotyl to the tank took care of the rest of them.

My juveniles have eaten all the small snails in their side of the tank, and I suspect Jeffrey has snacked on the odd one too on his side. If you don't want and more look out for eggs and remove them when you find them, after my initial concerns about having them I now don't mind...I'm getting used now to discovering strange insects and mullusca appearing from time to time.

Thanks for all the help, I just saw it on my tank and was like "How on earth? :S" Hehe, I like snails I just worried that they would have something, and my axie would eat it and get sick!
The snails healthy this morning, in a little tub I put him in :D
