Can someone post some pictures of there A. maculatum tank. I was thinking of updating mine.
 
Hi Reid, this isn't probably what you meant by "tank" but this is how I keep my maculatum. Each tub contains an individual animal so I can easily monitor how much each one eats. There is a couple of inches of top soil with a section of plastic tubing sunk in. It's covered with bark chippings and some cork bark in case they want a change of scenery. They are very secretive and rarely emerge from the tube. They have learned that food gets delivered at the mouth of their tube so you can watch them feed occasionally. I find them the least demanding of all my caudates.

Thanks Mark and Dane. One more question though, How long did it take your maculatum take to learn that food gets delivered at the mouth of the tube? Can your spotted salamander be hand fed? If so, how long did it take.
 
I havn't had mine a very long time so at the moment I am trying to teach them to be hand fed I'm not sure if it can be done
 
Hi Mark, can you tell me how you made a section of plastic tubing?
 
My tiger salamanders ate from my fingers with 5 minutes of putting them in their tank... And after about a week they'd recognise me coming up to the tank and come out and 'beg' for food...
 
Hi Reid, the plastic tube is drainage pipe which you can get from most DIY stores. It comes in different sizes but the one I use is about 2 inches in diameter which is large enough for the sal to turn around but small enough to make it feel secure. You can cut it to size using a normal hand saw (be careful! and get help if you're not sure how to do it). I put some topsoil in the pipe so that the sal is not sitting on the plastic.

    Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
