I have 2 axies, and I recently acquired a 55g tank; 4ft long, however high....think its 21 inches?

but i'm worried about, if i put them in, will all that water pressure on top of them hurt them? I have them in there now (they've only been in for 5 minutes when I thought of this!), and they went instant stress-gill once they had gotten to the bottom. do they need taken out asap, or is it just something they'll get used to???

they're temporarily in tubs floating at the surface until i can (hopefully!) get an answer...

edit:
dechlorinator has been used, so chlorine SHOULDN'T be present, and the tank is currently bare until my decorations/substrate get situated.

I have all my axies in a 106G, 4ft tank - it's shoulder deep. They are perfectly fine.
It's recommended to have axies in water at least as high as they are long, but deeper is even better, in my opinion.
My axies love to swim, and the deeper water seems to give them the freedom to do so.

As for the stressed gills, I think it would have just been the stress of the move. Let them settle in, and they will be happier than ever.

Congrats on the new tank, and pictures are a must. ;)

I didn't initially think it'd be an issue since i know so many have large tanks, but I got worried nonetheless...my one axie made a jump for it when I was transporting, and fell a few inches onto my carpet...edges of his tail were damaged, so I was petrified if something like the water or me not knowing something would stress him out more and potentially inflict more damage on the little guy...he had about 4 miniscule edges of his tail bloody like if we got a papercut (like, blood only where the cut was with no bleeding anywhere). the spots have all stopped bleeding (looking red?) so he looks fine now.
i think he'll be ok, but he scared the hell out of me! :(

It's always best to ask and be positive, rather than assume/hope only to find out it's not a good idea!

Poor boy - glad he is OK!
That happened to my axie once, freaked me out!
He should be fine, just keep his water clean and cool, as it always should be.. try not to fuss him, if you can. Keep an eye on him for fungus, etc. I'm sure he'll heal up quickly.

Sounds the same dimensions as my big tank- Is good fun for them, they'll have a blast. Only thing you'll need to be careful of is how you're supporting it. There's another thread where someone's stand collapsed underneath the tank :(, but reinforcing it with a flat board underneath should help spread the weight.
Now, PICS PLEASE :D :D :D!!!

Think of where axolotls naturally live...I'm sure it's much deeper in a lake than a typical 55 gallon tank.

I was mostly just horrified at the idea of putting a hurt axie under so much weight of water! he seems fine today, though, and thank you all for the responses! The stand is one that was previously used with the tank (got it 2nd handed from an ad for $85; a $300 set up!) and supported it well, since it was designed for the size, so i'm not too worried...for now.

and i'd post pics, but my design plans have yet to go into fruition!
note: i have a heap of materials, now what could i be making with them? ;)
