Hey! I'm a college student that really wants to get a newt this summer and then bring him/her with me back to school in the fall. My boyfriend has one and I just love him (the newt..well, and the bf

too)

I have been reading all over caudata.org. I've looked at all the forum topics and read various newt information and care sites and as a result, scribbled over 5 pages of notes and found that my bf has some problems with his newt tank set up (which will be fixed asap).

To the point, I understand that it is preferable for 1 newt to be in a 10 gallon tank or larger, but is it possible for a well thought out 5 gallon tank (with enough swimming and hiding room) to be suitable for 1 newt?

thanks so much, Lindsay}}}

Oh and is it true that newts are not particularily social animals? Is one newt happy alone? It seems this would be so, but I've seen lots of sites with people having numerous newts that follow eachother everywhere...hmmm? any comments???

If you had a small, terrestrial caudate, then a 5 gallon would be okay. But if you want one that swims around a lot, it would be a lot easier to maintain water quality in a bigger tank.

And no, they're not particularly social. They don't need companions. Most people keep theirs together to facilitate breeding, but they can be just fine by themselves.
