I was planning a 5 gallon so I bought all the supplies ... I was wondering if a single Marina elite filter rated for up to 3 gallons would be OK for a 10 gallon housing a single firebelly newt. I have it buffered effectively adding biological filtration and the flow is turned all the way down and produces practically 0 current

Do you have a photo of this kind of filter? Not sure what it is. But the answer is probably yes.

This is the filter the other sponge is inside the one you see is the buffer. The filter is less than 4 inches long
