I have a 2ft tank for setting up for two adult chinese firebelly newts. I am thinking of sand substrate as I have plenty. Plastic plants and real plant that grows quickly (something hog. I cant remember the name) that I had in my tropical tank before, coconut hides and a couple of ornaments. This is going to be an aquatic tank for them. I am thinking of putting a platform in there incase they want to go on land. I am in two minds whether to put the sand in or get cocosoil. I am hoping to get some stones as well. Confusing for me with starting with a blank canvas after seeing a lot of different set ups.

Most of the info you need is in this sticky thread, you can also use the search function to find lots of threads about Chinese firebellies.

Here is the care sheet from Caudata Culture

If the newts you've seen are from a pet/aquarium/herp shop I would strongly urge you to have a re-think. All Asian pet trade newts are taken from the wild and exported all over the world, they are usually in bad shape and are difficult to save, even when given the correct care. This is an old link, but still completely relevant today, unfortunately.

Thanks. I have them pages in my faves / bookmarks. I keep going back to them.
The adult newts are from a member on here.
I wouldnt buy from pet shops. I prefer to buy from breeders, or rehome. Pet shops, ie P@H are useless and know nothing about anything. I think they get there information from the first letter in a fortune cookie and make the rest up. lol.

Hornwort to go in soon. I used to have it in my tropical tank and it grew crazy. Should do for a cold water tank too.
