Here might be an interesting article on Salamandrina's ;

Both Sergé & Frank Pasmans had already informed me that it might turn out ot become 2 (sub)species

Here's the reference

MATTOCCIA, M. , ROMANO, A. & SBORDONI, V. (Italy)
Mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis of the spectacled salamander, Salamandrina terdigitata (Urodela: Salamandridae), supports the existence of two distinct species
Zootaxa 995: 1-19 (25 May 2005)

thank you VERY much Henk!
I'm quite interested in the article as I know some of the persons involved in this research and some similar ones...
...it's been a long time now that there are "rumours" of the splitting of terdigitata...maybe now it's time to make it officially...ahahah

Yep, it IS official (although two Italian groups appear to be fighting over who published this first...). The southern ones (Campania and Calabria) are Salamandrina terdigitata; the northern ones Salamandrina perspicillata. Southern ones are smaller, have wider and better defined "glasses" and are somewhat more vividly coloured dorsally (brownish colours on a dark background).
