Most people will say the bigger the better, It really depends on the temperament of your axolotls. Also think about how much room they will have once you put plants and hides etc in.
Agreed with what Olivia said- it depends on your 'lotls, and also if you are going to add to your amphibious family. I started out with a teeny tiny thing, went to a 4ft, and am now at a 6x2ft Whilst I did have to go through the stepping stones to adjust my family *giggles*, it did end up being MUCH more work moving tanks, and financially more money in terms of substrate, plants, filtration (although I ended up recommissioning my internal as a mechanical filter in addition to the canister ) and decorations.
