I am relatively new working in a local museum as an animal care specialist but would really love to expand it into a career. I have 15 years of personal experience with axolotls and breeding but mainly as pets. I am trying to design a tank (said tank furnished by the museum is 6 feet long and 18 inches deep) for 5 females that are being donated to the museum(unsure of their size or color yet).
At home, I keep a chiller, a bare bottom tank with River rocks, no filter and daily cleanings. But I’m not sure how that will look as an exhibit.
Also, we are going to try to work with the breeder donating the axolotls for school programs and provide egg hatchery set ups, once again, something I’ve done in my own home but unsure how to present inn an educational environment. We would like to engage the kids by having a research prompt based on axolotls in which they could win various things from the museum and be on the news. Any ideas of what appropriate research prompts could be for 4-6th graders?

No expert, but I would check out pictures and videos of zoos and aquariums for display ideas. Bare bottom looks a little austere but can be improved greatly with large pieces of river rock or clay pots if appropriate. For the prompts, that age group is pretty capable, they could write a sort of 'day in the life' based on what they've learned about amphibians to keep things open-ended for the more creative types.

i've always wanted to do a spray foam background in a tank, i've seen some pretty cool ones too. i think giving them multiple levels to explore on would be really interesting, as well as a lot of plants and driftwood.
picture examples of ideas i like below, and a picture of my girl's bare bottom tank
