Hi,
here are some shots of small fragment of former Danube inland delta. This refuge stuck between suburban zones and hodrelectric dam is one of the few which are fishless. Dobrogicus coexists here with vulgaris and frogs such as B.bombina, Pelobates, Hyla .
No detail photo because of no time.

Beautiful pictures! :) I'm very jealous, There is an old oxbow pond near me where you could see wild T. cristatus when I was a kid. I went down there recently for a look, it's full of fish nowadays so obviously the newts are long gone.
 
The term they have for that is so-called revitalization. Common practice is flow restoration or dredging and fish ponds setting. Funded through public sources. In the name of public interest of course.
To keep status quo of the places left requires maintenance otherwise they will extinct naturally by time. Who ever would support swamps nowdays ?

Chinadog, I've had similar experiences to you. Near where I live, two old village ponds (separate villages) which used to be full of pond plants and crested newts are sadly no more. Village properties in the southeast attract big prices, and I'm going to say this and be controversial, are bought by people with money, from out of area. They see a village pond and think.....white ducks and fish. Result, weed gone, newts gone and the opportunity for the next custodians of the natural world to learn about and appreciate what they should be inheriting....gone.

That's exactly what they did. The oxbow has been linked back to the nearby river so it no longer dries out in summer like it used to. And they have the nerve to call it a nature reserve.

I mean that actual state of this area doesn´t represent it´s former extensiveness , diversity etc. Slowly it turns into suburban zone with all negative impacts

They could at least made some fishless ponds as a retreat. Something similar happened near where I live, but at least they made 5 of these amphibian ponds. I'm not saying that this compensates all losses of course.

Hello,
I had been unaware of this oxbow though it's located not far from my house . It's perfectly hidden in a dense "jungle" of bottomland forest and I discovered it only because of noisy frog croak. It's inhabited by nice population of smooth newt, green frogs and some European pond turtles. Unfortunately I didn't observe any firebelly toads and crested newts.

    Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
