This time I hope I got the file size right. I will try and get a good close up of the black dot on his head and under his chin and post it later. As you will see im not much of a photographer. I am using a Fuji Finepix S5600 on 0.3 megapixels. if I increase the megapixels the file size is too much to upload. got some great shots at 6 megapixels but they are about 3000 kb each shot. Anyway this should be enough to see if I've got it right with regards to tank size, substrate and if he looks like the real deal.

That tank seems quite small, and there's no place for the axolotl to hide. This is important. The gravel is also the perfect size to cause an impaction. If the axolotl decides to eat a stone, it may be lodged in the intestines and lead to impaction, which may lead to death.

Have you looked at www.axolotl.org yet?

I agree with kaysie, you should change your substrate because you don't want to harm your axie. Also i suggest buying some fake plants (or real if you prefer) , my axies love hiding in them, behind them, on them etc and they're not expensive...and also maybe put in some rock caves or a place to hide because they like darkness. Just some suggestions to make your axie happy ;)

Thanks

Too much thanks for the prompt replies. I have changed the gravel to sand and got some more plants, Fake ones. Next step will be a bigger tank and a hollow log. I can't get it today as it is a public holiday in N.Z. Queens Birthday but tomorrow it shall be done I will post some photos of the new habitat when its done.

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian, check out a local glass merchant/glazier and check how much they charge to make a tank. Our local glazier made us several tanks ranging in price from $30-$50. If you think you may get another axie in the future then go for a 3ft long tank. Our 3ft cost $30. Price will be dependant on mm width of glass used. Just phone or check out Trademe or Trade and Exchange for secondhand ones. Beats having to pay a couple of hundred for a small tank from the petshop.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
