Hello all! A little over a month ago I rescued two Axolotls from very poor living conditions out of a pet store. They were in a terrarium with about an inch and a half of murky water in a very small portion of the tank. I noticed some white spots on Panchita (the leucistic, which is a female I believe) when I brought her home and was told it could possibly be regen from where a tank mate or tank conditions could have damaged her gills and they were now growing back. While her gills have definitely gotten larger and fluffier, there are still some white spots on them and also some very small spots on Grito's (male wild type) gills. I've done about 4 water changes since I got them, because I was told this could mitigate the issue, but it has not, and Panchita's skin on her back looks like it might be infected now. Yesterday I set up a hospital station for them and would love any suggestions as to what I could do better, or any tips and tricks that will help me get my homies fully rehabilitated. So far I've gotten their tubs set up, each with its own air stone, 2 oscillating fans and a tank fan blowing on them to keep their temps stable, and a separate tub for tea baths. Any and all recommendations will be helpful, I wanna get these little lotls back to living their best life! Attached are some pictures of their hospital setup. Thanks for looking and I look forward to any responses!

please read about and use holtfreters solution or a modified solution with the water. see Axolotls - Requirements & Water Conditions in Captivity
some people have high ph and kh, if that is the case use either holtfreters or modified but remove the bicarbonate of soda from the ingredients, the details of how much etc is in the link..
almond/catappa leaves in the water will also help with skin issues.
sometimes marks/spots/discoloration to the skin occurs as the axolotl gets older, this is due having multiple colours in their genes and can be a throw back.

And please (all hobbyists), stop buying animals in poor conditions from pet stores !!!
You send pet stores a very bad message : they can continue not to give adequate conditions to their animals and nevertheless earning easy money.
Please resist. "Rescuing" an animal (which will sometimes die within a few weeks) from a bad pet store is never a good idea.

Thanks. According to the KH and GH tests I have everything is good in my tank for axolotls. I don't think it's anything with my water as I've been buying RO water and remineralizing it it to specifications for an axolotl and all my levels in my tank are good and I keep it at 64-65 degrees Fahrenheit constantly and it hasn't gotten worse, it's just not really getting better as quick as I thought it would. I'll def check out the link thanks for the advice.

If you have any advice on how I can help them now that I have them that'd be great

I don’t believe he was saying he got it specifically from a pet store. Personally I’ve done tea bath that I found helped mine in the past. And Wolfen has the right idea to start. Most pet store do actually carry the catappa leaves in stores as well

I got them from a feed store for livestock. They were in rough-looking terrarium and they said they were feeding them rosies (they were way too small at the time), so I was trying to be a good person and help the little guys out. Although I don't think my purchase facilitated any more axolotls (I told the guy I'll rehab these guys, and come set up a proper tank for them and sell them the babies from these two) other than for myself, I'll keep it in mind. I did create this thread to hear alternative methods to what I've been trying, to see if it would speed up their healing, not to be lectured on why buying some sick fish is perpetuating a pet store's bad practices. I can only control what I do, and if I see an animal I think I can help, I'm going to do it.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
