I have a photography book about frogs, and it showed a female toad with four or five males surrounding it like that. It said often they drown while the males are fighting over it.
This mating balls are relatively common in manny amphibian species.... and last week I found a mating ball with two different species mixed together : Bufo calamit in the middle and Pelobates cultripes around them.
Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
