Removable Rock Wall

I made a temporary rock wall using plexiglass, great stuff, aquarium gravel, and textured paint. It's nice in case I didn't like how it turned out.

That looks good and is a GREAT idea! I love the idea of have something that is easily removable so you can make changes later! I bought everything I needed to do a wall and was going to attach it to the tank but this would be better IMO. Good job.

That looks really terrific! I've been looking into making a background for my tree frogs, and I might just use your method.
One question, how do you secure the plexi to the aquarium side?
 
It is secure because it is a snug fit. I cut the plexi-glass to pretty close dimensions and the great stuff is spongey so you can use it like a gasket between the two walls on the side. @ Mitch I tested the wall in water and it floats so if you are planning on using this idea for an aquatic species you may want to rethink ways of securing it to the tank.

This is by far the easiest DIY background I've seen on the internet, great job.

The absolute winning point here is that it is actually removable,
on the contrary of the vast majority, if not of all, of the other displayed DIY backgrounds online.

One idea so that it doesn't move one way or the other (for example when fullfilled with water),
would be to simply add a point (about the size of a tiny nut) of silicon glue at each side
(right and left) of the tank, just against that DIY background.

Thus, it will stick to the back of the viv/aquarium,
and if you ever decide to take it off of your vivarium/aquarium,
you just cut the silicon "points"/"nuts" out.
 
are you not worried about the toxicity of the paint leeching into your water and substrate? I'm not trying to alarm you, I just wonder if you know something I don't.
 
Ive used that exact paint on some plastic pots and a wooden table and it did not hold up well and it started flakeing 2 years later. So Im not so sure how it wil hold up for you. A few coats of a clear Salamander safe paint might help
 
let us know how it works out... it looks nice anyway... i'd like to try something like that... maybe pour sand on the foam after the rocks instead of paint.
 
Keep in mind that Great Stuff and other expanding foams WILL shrink a bit with age. Also keep in mind that expanding foams will leach propellant gasses for around two weeks after drying, dependent on ambient temperature.

    Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
