Just wondering cause im still trying to decided if I want to buy a Necturus maculosus or a Axolotls. And I dont see hardly any posts about Necturus maculousus and lots about Axolotls. Any advise or info would be most helpful!

Actually, I bought a Mudpuppy about 1 1/2 years ago at That Fish Place in Lancaster,PA. It's doing great and That Fish Place can ship animals for I think about $20. Just go on their website at www.thatfishplace.com. The Mudpuppy was $30, and they also sell Sirens and Axolotls. Hope that helps!

All mudpuppies you see available are wild caught...while axolotls breed rather easily.

TO be ethical, unless you try to plan on attempting to BREED sirens or mudpuppies, I would suggest doing the axolotl route. Buying an animal that you KNOW is wild caught is not fair to the animal if it is just being used your amusement, even if you love it.

Both Carolina Biological Supply and Nasco sell N. maculousus. All wild caught, of course. Axolotls are probably the better choice.

Aquiring an animal companion because it is "cool" is not a great reason to aquire one. This is how animals get neglected or sent to shelters, abandon or die as soon as the "cool" factor expires. Just make sure there is time and equipment and money to take care of the creatures appropiratly. I discourage any use of wild-caught specimens as pets for "pure enjoyment" unless your later attempt it to research into ways to breed them/better keep them.

That remark sort of hurts me, yes it is true to some people but not me. I have cooled down my entire house this winter for the mudpuppy. I believe that what I am going to keep my mudpuppy in is much better than any storage tanks they are housed in at the biological supply company. I also wan't to learn more about the necturus species.

[edited] Ann.. I can tell you care about all these different animals very much and i think thats cool!!!... personally i like the look of mudpuppys better and i hear they enjoy having more of a water current then Axolotls too! If i can rescue a mudpuppy from a research lab i'll do it anyday! Much love to all the newt and sal lovers! Keep up your commitment to this "hobby"!

Ryan I did not mean it specifically towards you but to other readers who are like "Oh yeah I think mudpuppies are cool too even though i know nothing about them"

and "saving" abused animals from suppliers/pet stores does not really save in the end, it just encourages more animal abuse because they are making $$$ of of people who care.

True, if there was not a demand for wild-caught mudpuppies, or any other animal for that matter, then people wouldn't rip them from their natural habitat. I fully agree with AnnMarie, not only do a lot of people neglect the animal when it isn't cool to them, but when animals are wild-caught they need to be treated often times for parasites and whatnot. Captive-bred axolotls are a better alternative for mudpuppies. Plus, I've heard that mudpuppies are far more apt to bite each others' limbs off.

Axie all the way man!

i think mudpuppies are cool and i know a good deal about them

First of all, mudpuppies in auctions on tinely, arent wild caught, just wait until tinley happens, look it up.
